A slew of fashion goers, eyeglass wearers, and a load of media (print and television) filled the open space of Spectacle’s brand new Distillery District shop on Thursday as they celebrated the launch of the Dan Levy and Spectacle (D.L. Eyewear x Spectacle) collaboration capsule collection.
“I feel overwhelmed,” Dan said. “It’s been only a few months since we’ve launched and to be here collaborating with Spectacle is such a thrill— the fact that they have embraced the line with such open arms means so much and I’m speechless, its been great.”
Many recognize the infamous Dan Levy as host of MTV’s former show, The After Show and previous FLARE Magazine columnist— who charmed the audience and readers with his cheeky banters and eye-fetching frames (pun intended).
“As soon as I left MTV I knew I wanted to create something and glasses seemed to be the only thing that I was really versed in; in terms of knowing the design, what fits, knowing what I like— and so, as soon as I left, I started pursuing this and then a year-and-a-half later, here we are!”
Having been wearing glasses since he was nine-years-old, and struggling to find frames that suit his face, Dan feels he knows the tricks of the trade when it comes to eyeglass shapes. “The biggest problem I’ve had was, I’d walk into an eyewear store (not Spectacle) but I don’t find anything and I think to myself, ‘How am I not able to find a pair that suits my face, that I love, that works?’ and so I thought, that’s going to be the goal to this collection— finding a comprehensive group of frames that really suits every face.”
The D.L. Eyewear and Spectacle collaboration is fairly safe, versatile and timeless and he expresses that, “At least one frame from the collection should suit everyone’s face, and I think, so far we’ve had no complaints!”
Dan and his family have been loyal clients of Spectacle’s and says he named each frame model after streets in the neighbourhood he grew up on in Toronto including: the McKenzie, Whitehall, Powell, Cluny and Birch. “I thought, it’s a Canadian company, it’s based out of Toronto— why not embrace the Torontonian in me and start with my neighbourhood then expand. I think any design that we come up with, moving forward, will all be based in Toronto in terms of street names, I think street names is going to be a running theme.” He even admits that his father, Eugene Levy (who many of you know from American Pie), wears the Whitehall frames in a tortoise shell sunglass all the time.
Spectacle and D.L. Eyewear collaborated with exclusive customized lens options including: polarized blue mirror lenses, polarized silver mirror lenses, polarized brown gradient, polarized grey gradient, and polarized greenbird gradient. “It’s all about pushing the limits! Spectacle teamed with me on taking some of my frames and really giving them life with a new lens; customizing lenses, putting in really high quality polarized lenses and I think it turned out amazing! I’m overwhelmed,” Dan said.
He even gave an inside scoop on what to expect for the future of D.L. Eyewear, “ We have our Spring/Summer 2014 collection coming up… I just had a meeting about that and it looks great!” Spectacle and myself included are looking forward to the new designs and colourways he has in store.
Thank you to our loyal followers for making the D.L. Eyewear x Spectacle event a huge hit, and a huge extended thanks to all the media that came by to support Spectacle and Toronto’s unforgettable face, Dan Levy!
