Happy Victoria Day Long Weekend!
As some of you may know, today marks the last day for Toronto's "This Is Not A Toy" exhibition at Canada's Design Museum — known as the Design Exchange, which features contemporary art and collectible designs. This exclusive and interim exhibit was guest curated by none other than, Pharrell Williams — a dedicated supporter of such artists as: Takashi Murakami, KAWS, FriendsWithYou, and toy producer MediCom. Alongside the project includes: instigator and co-curator, John Wee Tom and DX associate curator, Sara Nickleson.
Thankfully enough, I found time out of my hectic schedule to visit the exhibition last week and I kid you not, upon entrance, I felt like a big kid. It was stimulating, interesting, unique, corky, abstract, magical, simplistic and yet intricate all in one. Was I hallucinating?
Lying at the intersection of fine art, marketing, pop culture, product and graphic design, designer toys are highly collectible pieces of miniature sculpture for a post-Pop world. Ranging in prices from just a few dollars to many thousands more, these figures are part merchandise, part art.
If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to check out the exhibit before it's gone. Today is your last chance and it couldn't have landed on a better, mild, long weekend.
